On 19th and 20th October 2023, we hosted A 2-day Workshop for Youths at the Federal University, Wukari, aimed at promoting peace education. The event, titled “Promoting Peace Education Through Dialogue Among Youths,” brought together students, faculty, and special guests to foster discussions around peacebuilding, conflict resolution, and the role of young people in promoting peaceful coexistence.
The primary goal of the event was to create a platform where students could engage in open dialogue on issues of peace and conflict. The program sought to enlighten the participants on the importance of peace education in preventing violence, fostering mutual understanding, and creating a culture of non-violence among youths, especially in the university community. The initiative was particularly timely, given the rising tensions and conflicts that had affected parts of Nigeria, including Wukari and its environs.
The event featured a diverse group of speakers, including notable academics, peace activists, and representatives from various civil society organisations. Among the keynote speakers was Rev.Dr. Bature, a renowned expert on conflict management and peace studies, emphasised the crucial role education plays in cultivating a culture of peace. He highlighted how dialogue, as a key component of peace education, can be instrumental in resolving conflicts peacefully.
Another highlight of the event was the panel discussion, where students, lecturers, and community leaders discussed the role of youth in bridging cultural and religious divides. Panellists shared personal experiences and explored the underlying causes of conflict in society, stressing the need for dialogue and empathy.
One of the most exciting aspects of the event was the active participation of the students. The youth-focused interactive sessions allowed students to voice their opinions, share their experiences, and ask questions about peace and conflict resolution. These dialogues were not only engaging but also insightful, as many students spoke about the challenges they face in promoting peace in their communities. A notable contribution came from [insert student’s name], who shared a moving story about her involvement in a peace initiative that brought together different ethnic groups in her hometown.
The students also took part in various workshops, where they learned practical skills such as conflict mediation, active listening, and negotiation. These skills are expected to empower them to become peace ambassadors, both on campus and in their wider communities.
The peace dialogue concluded with a strong call to action for both the university and the students to continue promoting peace education. The event helped raise awareness about the significance of dialogue in fostering peaceful interactions among diverse groups. Students left the event inspired to take a more active role in their communities, with a shared commitment to spreading the message of peace.
